This is the house where Rembrandt van Rijn, the famous Dutch painter of the Dutch Golden Age, worked and lived for 20 years. Rembrandt is one of the greatest baroque painters in history and possibly the most recognized Dutch artist.

This house was where Rembrandt lived between 1639 and 1658. The building was constructed between 1606 and 1607, in the Eastern part of the city (nowadays the house is in the heart of Amsterdam City center), new part of the town were many rich artists and merchants settled. In the same year that Rembrandt bought the house, he was awarded by the prestigious commission to paint the Night Watch.

Although he was earning a lot of money, he was not able to come up with the entirety of the house purchase price which was thirteen thousand guilders, a very high amount, so he was allowed to pay it off in installments. The painter couldn’t pay off the mortgage and this caused his financial crisis; after four years of desperate attempts of trying to pay the debt, in 1656 the property was inventoried and his collection of art, curiosities and household effects were sold. The house was auctioned in 1658 and Rembrandt moved to a small rented house on the Rozengracht, where he lived until his death in 1669.

At the time of the bankruptcy in 1656, a notary wrote a list of his possessions. For that reason we know how the house was furnished in Rembrandt’s time. Today, it is restored identically and furnished with items and works of art from the master’s time.

Daily from 11:30 to 17:00, The Rembrandt House offers free workshops Print Making in the Apprentice’s Studio, there are also daily demonstrations of how etchings and painting were made in the seventeenth century. These demonstrations take park in Rembrandt’s printing room and painting studio. There are also regular special exhibitions devoted to Rembrandt and to past and present artists who have been inspired by Rembrandt.
