Ijscuypje Ice Cream

In Amsterdam, there is no shortage of ice cream places, especially in the summer months, but none are like Ijscuypje.

While many follow traditional Italian recipes, Ijscuypje is the only place that sells traditional Dutch ice cream. Italian ice cream is made with milk, but Ijscuypje’s recipe uses slagroom (full-fat cream). The result is richer, creamier and softer than any you’ve ever tried.

Originally opened as a small stand in the Pijp, Ijscuypje has expanded to several locations around the city.

Don’t expect to find this treat here if you come in the winter, though. During colder months, Ijscuypje switches to become Stampotje, and sells another traditional Dutch dish called stamppot, a stew served with mashed potatoes that’s just as good at chasing away the chills as their ice cream is at beating the heat.
